Frequently asked questions about forestry grants in Atlantic Canada

Find clear answers about silviculture funding, road and culvert grants, wildfire mitigation support, and innovation programs across NB, NS, PEI, and NL.

How do I apply for forestry grants in Atlantic Canada?

Start by defining your project scope (silviculture, roads, biodiversity, wildfire, innovation) and confirming eligibility for provincial and federal programs. Review application guides, deadlines, and cost‑share rules, and prepare a management plan, maps, and quotes. Many programs require uploading receipts for reimbursement and periodic reporting. Keep a calendar of deadlines and field seasons to avoid delays.

What activities do silviculture funding programs cover?

Programs typically fund site preparation, tree planting, tending and release, pre‑commercial thinning, commercial thinning, and regeneration monitoring. Some include seedling purchase rebates, protection from deer browse, and forest nursery support. Costs are often reimbursed per hectare with BMP compliance. Management plans are commonly required.

Are forest road and culvert projects eligible for cost‑share?

Yes. Many programs offer forest road funding, bridge installation grants, culvert replacement funding, and riparian crossing compliance support. Projects must follow BMPs and fish passage standards, and may require design approvals. Keep erosion and sediment control plans in your application.

What federal programs support innovation and modernization?

IFIT supports first‑in‑kind technologies in mills, while the Forest Innovation Program funds pre‑commercial R&D and pilots. ACOA can support productivity, software, and market development, and 2 Billion Trees funds large‑scale planting. Stacking with provincial grants is possible within program limits.

Who is eligible for woodlot owner grants?

Private woodlot owners with an approved management plan are often eligible for silviculture cost‑share, planting, thinning, and access road improvements. Cooperatives and woodland associations may help with applications and BMP training. Check province‑specific criteria and regional marketing boards.

Is wildfire mitigation funding available for small woodlots?

Yes. Programs may cover fuel reduction, firebreak construction, equipment purchases, and community wildfire protection plan development. Some support prescribed burn planning and early suppression tools. Eligibility and cost‑share ratios vary by province and risk level.

Can mills access grants for mass timber and digitalization?

Mills can pursue mass timber grants, CLT and glulam funding, kiln upgrades, heat recovery systems, and ERP/optimization software funding. ACOA and provincial modernization programs often co‑fund productivity and export readiness. Ensure your business case demonstrates market demand and efficiency gains.

How does forest carbon and MRV funding work?

Carbon‑related programs support MRV tools, LiDAR acquisition, drone monitoring, GIS upgrades, and inventory systems. Applicants must follow accepted protocols and maintain auditable data. Projects often integrate climate‑smart silviculture and biodiversity safeguards.

Are there grants for training and safety in forestry?

Yes. Training grants can cover mechanized harvester courses, trucking training, worker safety training, PPE, and apprenticeships. Certification support (COR/SECOR) and SFI/CSA audits may also be funded. Align training plans with workforce needs and seasonal operations.

Can I combine multiple forestry funding programs?

In many cases, yes—within stacking rules. Applicants often pair provincial silviculture funding with ACOA support, training grants, or federal innovation programs. Confirm maximum public funding percentages and eligible cost windows before committing.
